I want a synth and I don't know where to start!

Postby dantez on Fri Feb 29, 2008 3:15 am

So I'm new to the world of keyboards and synths.

I'm looking for a good synth that can double as a midi-keyboard for my home studio. I'm looking to buy new rather than 2nd hand and I don't want to spend thousands. Can any one lend their advice?

Who are the major players? What makes one synth better than another?

Well, if analog doesn't matter to you, and you really do wanna buy new, then the Roland SH-201 is prolly a good idea. Its got tons of good reviews and seems like a good synth.

What I wouldn't suggest is something like a Micro Korg, terribly limited synth. I know someone very credible who had one, and he sold it because it was basically useless.

Other options are things like the Juno G which is a big synth with tons of patches, you could also with a Nord Lead. Same deal.

I've researched this all quite a bit, so hopefully that helps.

Thanks Merc!

The SH-201 looks great. Do you know if it works well with Mac (Logic)?

I was also looking at Yamaha MM6 or Roland Juno-D, Korg Micro-X. Anyone have any experience with these?

Thanks.
